Alexandre Geniez (AG2R La Mondiale) zwyciężył w 39. edycji Grand Prix Cycliste la Marseillaise.
Pagórkowaty klasyk wokół Marsylii liczył 145 kilometrów i był gratką dla puncherów. Wśród szesnastu ekip nie było niestety żadnego Polaka.
Już na pierwszym podjeździe zaatakowali: Evaldas Siskevicius (Delko Marseille-Provence KTM), Dries de Bondt (Vérandas Willems-Crelan), Brecht Ruyters (Cibel-Cebon), Tom Dernies i Emiel Vermeulen (pbaj Roubaix-Lille Métropole).
Czołówka utrzymywała przez spory dystans przewagę około pięciu minut. Jako pierwszy odpadł Vermeulen i na czele kręciło tylko czterech zawodników. 45 kilometrów przed metą z przewagi zostały tylko dwie minuty, a duża grupa naciskała coraz mocniej.
Przyspieszenie peletonu spowodowało, że już 30 kilometrów przed metą ucieczka przeszła do historii. Na podjeździe Route des Crêtes na mocny atak zdecydowali się: Tony Gallopin i Alexandre Geniez (obaj AG2R La Mondiale) oraz Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie). Za nimi kręcili: Valentin Madouas (FDJ), Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale), Jesus Herrada (Cofidis), Rémy Di Gregorio (Delko Marseille-Provence KTM), Guillaume Martin oraz Odd Christian Eiking (obaj Wanty-Groupe Gobert).
Dość szybko grupki się zjechały i zaczęły się pojedyncze ataki. Próbowali Gallopin czy Martin, ale konkurenci szybko ich doganiali. Wszystko rozegrało się już na zjeździe do mety. Najwięcej sił po tym wyczerpującym wyścigu zachował Alexandre Geniez (Ag2r La Mondiale).
Drugi finiszował Odd Christian Eiking (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), a trzeci Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie).
