Mark Padun kontynuuje świetną passę drużyny Bahrain-Victorious. Ukrainiec wygrał siódmy etap wyścigu Criterium de Dauphine. Nowym liderem klasyfikacji generalnej został Richie Porte (INEOS Greandiers), który również był bardzo mocny na finałowym podjeździe na La Plagne.
Siódmy etap wyścigu Criterium du Dauphine rozpoczął się w Saint-Martin-Le-Vinoux i po 171,5 kilometrach kolarze finiszowali w La Plagne. Pierwszych 80 kilometrów było płaskich, ale następnie rozpoczęła się górzysta część trasy. Premia górska kategorii specjalnej Col du Pré była pierwszą dużą trudnością. Długość tego podjazdu to 11,9 km, a średnie nachylenie wynosiło 7,8%. Po szybkim i trudnym technicznie zjeździe z dużą liczbą zakrętów następował podjazd drugiej kategorii Cormet de Roseland. Zjazd stamtąd był nieco łatwiejszy niż pierwszy, a po nim kolarze rozpoczęli finałową wspinaczkę na La Plagne (16,9 km, średnie nachylenie 7,5%). Łączna liczba metrów przewyższenia na tym etapie wynosiła 3911, zaś szczyt ostatniego podjazdu znajdował się na wysokości ponad 2000 metrów nad poziomem morza.
Bardzo długo trwała walka o zawiązanie ucieczki dnia. Udało się to dopiero na 67. kilometrze. Najpierw od peletonu odjechało pięciu zawodników: Alexis Renard (Israel Start-Up Nation), Marco Haller (Bahrain Victorious), Martin Salmon (Team DSM), Pierre Rolland oraz Franck Bonnamour (B&B p/b KTM).
Następnie próbowali dołączyć do odjazdu dnia także inni zawodnicy: Michael Valgren, Lawson Craddock (EF Nippo), Warren Barguil (Arkéa Samsic), Steff Cras, Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal), Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates), Kenny Elissonde (Trek-Segafredo), Martijn Tusveld (Team DSM), Nils Politt (BORA-hansgrohe) oraz Jorge Arcas (Movistar).
Na pierwszej premii górskiej kategorii HC wciąż obecna była różnica między prowadzącą piątka, a dziesięcioma goniącymi kolarzami. U podnóża tej góry było to pół minuty. Następnie, w połowie Col du Pré, pośród goniących kolarzy pozostało tylko kilku zawodników: Valgren, Craddock, Arcas, Holmes, Elissonde, oraz Tusveld.
Wreszcie na końcu podjazdu obie grupy zjechały się, a premię górską na Col du Pré wygrał Lawson Craddock. W tym momencie czołówkę tworzyło dziewięciu zawodników. Na zjazdach, a potem w dolinie poprzedzającej finałową wspinaczkę sytuacja tasowała się. 20 kilometrów przed metą wyścig prowadziło pięciu zawodników: Valgren, Haller, Bjerg, Tusveld oraz Elissonde. Mieli oni około 2,5 minuty przewagi nad peletonem, w którym pracowała drużyna Movistar.
Na czele najdłużej utrzymali się Rolland oraz Elissonde, którzy zostali doścignięci 10 kilometrów przed metą. W tym momencie pracę w grupie lidera Alexeya Lutsenki nadal wykonywała drużyna Movistar. Dziś wczorajszy zwycięzca etapowy Alejandro Valverde nadawał tempo w pierwszej części podjazdu. Gdy skończył swoją pracę około 8 kilometrów przed metą, jako pierwszy z peletonu zaatakował Richie Porte. Tasmańczyk pociągnął za sobą Enrica Masa, Marka Paduna oraz Sepa Kussa. Chwilę później do przodu pojechali jednak Kuss i Padun, którzy 7 kilometrów przed metą mieli około 30 sekund przewagi. Między nimi a grupą lidera „wisieli” Porte oraz Mas.
Następnie Mark Padun zostawił Seppa Kussa i samotnie pomknął w stronę szczytu. 3 kilometry przed metą miał już minutę przewagi nad grupą lidera. W międzyczasie następowały także ataki z peletonu – między innymi Bena O’Connora, Miguela Angela Lopeza oraz Davida Gaudu.
Ukrainiec z drużyny Bahrain-Victorious był w stanie jechać na tyle równym i mocnym tempem, że nie dał się dogonić żadnemu z rywali, a tym samym odniósł zdecydowanie najbardziej prestiżowe zwycięstwo w swojej karierze. Na drugim miejscu linię mety przekroczył mocny Porte, który w końcówce odjechał między innymi od Lopeza i Kussa, a tym samym został nowym liderem klasyfikacji generalnej.
