Włoch był najszybszy na trasie holenderskiego wyścigu jednodniowego po finiszu z trzyosobowej ucieczki. Ładnie pojechał Jan Tratnik (CCC Sprandi Polkowice).
Volta Limburg Classic o długości 198km rozgrywany w okolicach Maastricht najeżony jest krótkimi, ale stromymi podjazdami i stanowi rozgrzewkę przed Ardeńskim Tryptykiem. Na starcie stanęli kolarze CCC Sprandi Polkowice, a Maciej Paterski był wskazywany jako jeden z faworytów.
Na początku od peletonu oderwało się sześciu kolarzy, ale po kilku kilometrach harcownicy zrezygnowali z jazdy przed rozpędzoną grupą. Wtedy na kontrę zdecydowało się aż 18 zawodników. Spora czołówka, w której znalazł się Simone Ponzi (CCC Sprandi Polkowice) jechała przed rywalami przez około 30km, ale przewaga ani razu nie wzrosła powyżej 40 sekund. Ostatecznie stawka połączyła się około 45km po starcie.
Przez blisko 80km nie pojawiały się ataki, ale na podjazdach i wietrznych odcinkach peleton rwał się na mniejsze grupy. Dopiero niecałe 60km przed metą ucieczkę stworzyli Nick Van der Lijke, Martijn Tusveld (obaj Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Marco Canola (Nippo-Vini Fantini) i Xandro Meurisse (Wanty-Groupe Gobert). Ich przewaga nie była duża, ale mocno porwany peleton nie gonił ze zbyt dużą siłą.
30km przed metą Tusveld osłabł i został za pozostałą trójką. Pierwsza goniąca grupa, w której znajdował się Jan Tratnik (CCC Sprandi Polkowice) liczyła 12 kolarzy i traciła wtedy około 1’30”, a peleton był kolejną minutę z tyłu.
18km przed metą z goniącej grupki zaatakował Jan Tratnik. Słoweniec starał się tym zachęcić kolegów do mocniejszej pogoni, gdyż przewaga ucieczki nie malała. Gdy zabrakło chętnych do współpracy, kolarz CCC Sprandi Polkowice postanowił samotnie ruszyć za trzema harcownikami. Za mistrzem Słowenii, ze stratą około 15 sekund, jechali Loic Vliegen (BMC), Paul Martens (LottoNL-Jumbo), Jeroen Meijers (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Dmitri Peyskens (WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect), Jerome Baugnies (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Iuri Filosi (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Lorenzo Rota (Bardiani-CSF), Krister Hagen (Team Coop) i Rob Ruijgh (Tarteletto-Isorex).
Niestety z powodu błędów w oznakowaniu trasy Tratnik stracił kilka sekund przewagi. Mistrz Słowenii ostatecznie został złapany 3km przed metą.
Ambitna jazda kolarza „Pomarańczowych” nie pomogła i o wygraną walczyło trio Van der Lijke, Canola, Meurisse. Dzięki długiemu finiszowy najszybszy okazał się Canola, który wyprzedził Meurisse’a i Van der Lijke. Tratnik zajął pozycję na początku drugiej dziesiątki.
