Mistrz Niemiec Pascal Ackermann nie zmarnował wspaniałej pracy drużyny BORA-hansgrohe i był najszybszy na finiszu wyścigu Brussels Cycling Classic. Na ostatnich 500 metrach wydarzyła się kraksa, która wyeliminowała niektórych sprinterów z walki o zwycięstwo.
Podczas tego belgijskiego klasyku rangi 1.HC kolarze mieli do pokonania 13 krótkich podjazdów na dystansie 201 km. Zazwyczaj wyścig ten padał łupem sprintera, który najszybciej zafiniszował ze zredukowanego peletonu. W poprzednim sezonie był to Arnaud Démare (obecny na starcie).
W ucieczkę dnia zabrało się sześciu zawodników: Oliver Naesen (AG2R), Jonas Gregaard (Astana), Lars Bak (Lotto-Soudal), Hamish Schreurs (Israel Cycling Academy), Nick Van der Lijke (Roompot) oraz Tom Wirtgen (AGO-Aqua Service).
50 kilometrów przed metą, gdy przewaga ucieczki dnia wynosiła już tylko około minuty, z peletonu kontratakowało trio z kolarzem CCC – Kamilem Gradkiem. Wraz z Polakiem próbowali uciec Rémi Cavagna (Quick-Step Floors) i Thomas Sprengers (Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise). Kilkanaście kilometrów później do tej grupki przybyły świeże siły w osobie Anthony`ego Turgis z Cofidisu.
28 kilometrów przed końcem obie grupy się połączyły, ale wówczas przewaga nad peletonem, w którym pracowały przede wszystkim drużyny Groupama-FDJ i BORA-hansgrohe, wynosiła około 20 sekund.
25,5 kilometra przed metą z grupki uciekinierów zaatakował Cavagna, do którego dołączył po chwili Naesen. Tej dwójce udało się odjechać jednak tylko na chwilę. Następnie wszystko ponownie się zjechało, ale z ucieczki odpadł Kamil Gradek.
Dużo ochoty do pracy miał Turgis, który niestety doznał również wielkiego pecha. Na jednym z 90-stopniowych zakrętów w lewo dość spektakularnie się wywrócił, powodując upadek również Sprengersa. W rezultacie na czele pozostał samotny Lars Bak, który wrócił do peletonu 10 kilometrów przed metą.
Kraksa uciekinierów nie była niestety jedyną, bowiem około 11 kilometrów przed metą, gdzieś w środku peletonu, wydarzyła się kolejna.
Kilku kolarzy, w tym Dries De Bondt, próbowało ubiec sprinterów, ale dziś to po prostu nie było możliwe. W masowym sprincie najszybszy był Pascal Ackermann, który wyprzedził Jaspera Stuyvena.
Obrońca tytułu Démare był dobrze ustawiony do momentu kraksy, ale pechowo dla Francuza wydarzyła się ona tuż obok niego (wydaje się, że jeden kolarz stracił równowagę i wpadł na innego). Wobec tego nie miał szans na powtórzenie sukcesu sprzed roku. Linię mety przejechał nienaruszony, ale z nieszczęśliwą miną.
Dziesiąty finiszował Jonas Koch z drużyny CCC Sprandi Polkowice.
