Bryan Coquard z drużyny Vital Concept wygrał piąty i ostatni etap wyścigu Baloise Belgium Tour z metą w Tongeren. Tytuł sprzed roku obronił zaś Jens Keukeleire (Lotto-Soudal).
Piąty i zarazem ostatni etap Baloise Belgium Tour prowadził z Landen do Tongeren i liczył 157,7 km. Profil był całkowicie płaski, zatem po raz czwarty w tegorocznej edycji tego wyścigu można było spodziewać się, że o zwycięstwie etapowym zdecyduje masowy sprint.
Ucieczkę dnia stworzyło pięciu kolarzy: Kevin van Melsen (Wanty – Groupe Gobert), Jonas Rickaert (Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise), Timothy Stevens (Cibel – Cebon), Kenny Molly (reprezentacja Belgii) oraz Jens Adams ( Pauwels sauzen – Vastgoedservice Continental Team).
Około 25 kilometrów przed metą z peletonu kontratakowali Andrei Grivko (Astana) oraz Daan Soete (Telenet Fidea Lions).
Wszystkie ataki zostały skasowane 11,5 kilometra przed metą, a peleton rozpoczął ostatnie przygotowania do finiszu.
Na ostatnich kilometrach rywalizację utrudniły ulewne opady deszczu, w których najlepiej finiszował 26-letni Francuz Bryan Coquard. Kolarz Vital Concept popisał się „inteligentnym” sprintem na lekko wznoszącym się finiszu, pokonując tym samym dominującą drużynę Lotto-Soudal.
Klasyfikacja generalna drugi rok z rzędu padła łupem Jensa Keukeleire`a. Warto odnotować, że w ubiegłym roku Belg wygrał ten wyścig ścigając się w barwach drużyny Orica-Scott.
