Mark Cavendish (Sky Team) po spektakularnym finiszu na mecie 3. etapu Tour of Britain z olbrzymią przewagą pokonał nowego lidera – Leigh Howarda (Oirca GreenEdge) oraz jego klubowego kolegę – Aidisa Kruopisa.
Lekko pofałdowany etap z Jedburgh do Dumfries liczył 161,4 km. Długo uciekała piątka kolarzy, jednak na około 20 kilometrów przed metą odjechało od niej dwóch zawodników. Byli to: Wesley Kreder (Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team) oraz Peter Hawkins (IG – Sigma Sport). Gdy zasadnicza grupa schwytała ich wcześniejszych towarzyszy, przewaga uciekającego duetu wciąż wynosiła ponad 40 sekund.
Wkrótce z peletonu przeskoczył do nich Sep Vanmarcke (Garmin-Sharp). Od czołówki odpadł Irlandczyk Hawkins. Niestety również Belg i Holender musieli uznać wyższość ekip sprinterskich i zostali doścignięci na ostatnich 5 kilometrach.
W samej końcówce Mark Cavendish był znakomicie rozprowadzony przez Sky Team. Mistrz świata z przewagą kilku długości roweru pokonał wczorajszego zwycięzcę – Leigh Howarda oraz etapowego zwycięzcę tegorocznego Tour de Pologne – Aidisa Kruopisa.
Howard dzięki bonifikacie stał się liderem etapówki.
