Norweg Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) wygrał czwarty etap tegorocznego wyścigu Deutschland Tour. Triumf w klasyfikacji generalnej przypieczętował reprezentant gospodarzy Nils Politt (BORA – hansgrohe).

Czwarty, a zarazem ostatni odcinek tegorocznego wyścigu „dookoła Niemiec” liczył sobie 154-kilometry. Na trasie zlokalizowano w sumie sześć krótkich podjazdów, które znalazły się w środkowej fazie etapu. Rywalizacja zakończyła się na rundach w Norymberdze – na każdej z nich kolarze podjeżdżali pod półkilometrowy podjazd (5,4%), co zapowiadało możliwe ataki.

Już podczas pierwszej niezwykle stromej premii górskiej próbę odjazdu podjęła piątka kolarzy, wśród których byli: Davide Formolo (UAE Team Emirates) i Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck-Quick-Step). Ta akcja okazała się nieskuteczna. Następnymi śmiałkami, którzy podjęli próbę odjazdu byli: Dario Cataldo (Movistar Team) oraz Justin Wolf (Bike Aid). Następnie do Włocha i Niemca zdołał jeszcze przeskoczyć mistrz Francji w wyścigu ze startu wspólnego – Remi Cavagna. Wspomniana trójka harcowników 90-kilometrów przed metą miała dwie minuty przewagi nad peletonem.

W międzyczasie próbę oderwania się od grupy zasadniczej podjęli: Marco Haller (Bahrain – Victorious), a także Anders Skaarseth (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team). Akcja Austriaka i Norwega nie trwała, jednak zbyt długo. Niestety dla reszty uciekinierów peleton ponownie przyśpieszył w pagórkowatej części trasy i dopadł uciekającą trójkę około 75-kilometrów przed metą zlokalizowaną w Norymberdze.

Spokój w peletonie nie trwał zbyt długo. 70-kilometrów przed finiszem na czele ponownie pojawił się Marco Haller, tym razem w towarzystwie Jannika Steimle (Deceuninck Quick-Step). Nieco później na kontrę zdecydowali się: Jonas Rutsch (EF Education – Nippo), Fredrik Dversnes (Team Coop) i Juri Hollmann (Movistar Team). Wspomniana trójka kolarzy zdołała dołączyć do Marco Hallera i Jannika Steimle. 

Sytuacja jednak zmieniała się, jak w kalejdoskopie i po dogonieniu uciekającej piątki kolarzy kolejni śmiałkowie próbowali oderwać się od grupy zasadniczej. Tym razem byli, to: Dylan Teuns (Bahrain – Victorious) i Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar Team). Z niewielką 50-sekundową stratą, około 48-kilometrów przed metą jechał już coraz mniejszy peleton. W międzyczasie próbę przeskoku do uciekającej dwójki podjęli João Almeida (Deceuninck Quick-Step) oraz Davide Formolo (UAE Team Emirates).

36-kilometrów przed finiszem Portugalczyk wraz z Włochem powrócili do peletonu, który tracił do Teunsa i Jorgensona około 40 sekund. Duńczyk reprezentujący ekipę Movistar Team po pewnym czasie osłabł i na czele pozostał Sam Dylan Teuns. Belg został wchłonięty przez peleton już na ulicach Norymbergi niecałe 5000 metrów przed metą.

W końcowym sprincie, to Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) okazał się najlepszy. Ten rezultat sprawił, że Norweg wskoczył na trzecie miejsce w końcowej klasyfikacji generalnej. Drugi na mecie był reprezentant gospodarzy Pascal Ackermann (BORA – hansgrohe), który skończył swój rodzimy wyścig na drugiej pozycji w „generalce”. Na trzeciej pozycji na linii mety zameldował się Włoch Luca Mozzato (B&B Hotels p/b KTM).

Triumf w klasyfikacji generalnej odniósł dotychczasowy lider Niemiec Nils Politt (BORA – hansgrohe).
