Lukas Pöstlberger (
Austriak ponadto został nowym liderem klasyfikacji generalnej francuskiej imprezy.Drugi odcinek tegorocznego ścigania w wyścigu Critérium du Dauphiné liczył sobie 173-kilometry. Na trasie organizatorzy imprezy odbywającej się na południu Francji umieścili pięć kategoryzowanych podjazdów: Col de Peyra Taillade (8,6 km, 7,2%), Côte de la Vachellerie (9,2 km, 4,2%), Côte d’Auvers (4,3 km, 4%), Côte de la forêt de Pourcheresse (7,1 km, 6,5%) oraz Côte de Masset (1,3 km, 4,7%). Ostatnie z dwóch wspomnianych wzniesień znalazły się na ostatnich 14-kilometrach drugiego etapu wyścigu Critérium du Dauphiné.
Od początku dzisiejszej rywalizacji wielu zawodników próbowało swoich sił, aby zabrać się w odjazd. Po kilkunastu kilometrach przetasowań ostatecznie na czele wykrystalizowała się pięcioosobowa ucieczka, w składzie której znaleźli się: Lukas Pöstlberger (
Anthony Delaplace ( Matthew Holmes ( Shane Archbold ( Robert Power (W tamtym momencie wyścigu tempo w grupie zasadniczej dyktowali głównie kolarze zespołu INEOS Grenadiers. Nieco później kolarzom ścigającym się w Delfinacie zaczął przeszkadzać padający deszcz. W międzyczasie z dzisiejszej rywalizacji wycofali się: Ian Garrison (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) oraz Benjamin Perry (Astana – Premier Tech).
65-kilometrów przed metą grupa zasadnicza traciła do czołowej piątki niemal trzy i pół minuty. Chwilę potem problemy z utrzymaniem się w ucieczce miał Australijczyk Robert Power. Ostatecznie zawodnik zespołu Qhubeka-ASSOS został doścignięty przez peleton, w którym na czele pojawili się jeszcze kolarze ekipy Bahrain-Victorious.
Przewaga uciekinierów nad grupą zasadniczą spadła do dwóch minut na szczycie podjazdu Côte d’Auvers. Wymusiło to na późniejszym zjeździe ataki z grona harcowników. Na wspólną akcję 34-kilometry przed metą zdecydowali się Austriak Lukas Pöstlberger i Nowozelandczyk Shane Archbold. Wspomniana dwójka szybko zostawiła za sobą Matthew Holmesa i Anthony’ego Delaplace’a. 19-kilometrów przed końcową kreską Pöstlberger i Archbold mieli przewagę 50 sekund nad oswoimy dawnymi współtowarzyszami ucieczki oraz nieco ponad dwie i pół minuty nad peletonem.
W tym samym czasie z grupy zasadniczej na dwójkową akcję zdecydował się duet z zespołu Trek-Segafredo. Mads Pedersen i Jasper Stuyven wspólnie odjechali na zjeździe, aby zyskać sobie przewagę przed dwoma finałowymi wzniesieniami. Zaraz potem peleton skasował jednak tą próbę odjazdu. Tymczasem na czele pozostał już sam Lukas Pöstlberger. Kolarz zespołu BORA – hansgrohe zostawił za sobą Shane’a Archbolda i samotnie mknął na linię mety.

Gdy Austriaka od końcowej kreski dzieliło jeszcze 11-kilometrów peleton tracił do niego już tylko dwie minuty. Wtedy też z grupy zasadniczej próbował odjechać kolejny Austriak Felix Gall (Team DSM). Zaraz potem kłopoty z utrzymaniem się w peletonie miał dotychczasowy lider Brent Van Moer (Lotto Soudal). Chwilę później w grupie zasadniczej nie było też Chrisa Froome’a (Israel Start-Up Nation). Problemy miał, również Francuz Warren Barguil (Arkéa-Samsic).

Lukas Pöstlberger na szczycie wzniesienia Côte de la forêt de Pourcheresse (7,1 km, 6,5%) miał jeszcze około 50 sekund przewagi nad peletonem, z którego do jadącego na czele Austriaka próbował odjechać Australijczyk Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën Team). W grupie zasadniczej ogromną pracę na rzecz Sonny’ego Colbrellego wykonywali zawodnicy ekipy Bahrain-Victorious.
Na ostatnich kilometrach widać było, że Pöstlberger znacząco osłabł, ale mimo kryzysu Austriak wygrał drugi etap wyścigu Critérium du Dauphiné. Drugie miejsce po finiszu z małego peletonu zajął Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Victorious), a na trzecim miejscu zameldował się Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team).
