Mathieu van der Poel wygrał 7. etap Tour of Britain, który kończył się na krótkim podjeździe. Kolarz Corendon-Circus umocnił się na prowadzeniu w klasyfikacji generalnej.
Przedostatni etap wyścigu był jeden z najtrudniejszych. Trasa liczyła 188 kilometrów i znalazły się na niej 4 premie górskie. Oprócz nich do pokonania było wiele nieoznakowanych podjazdów. Etap zakończył się dwiema rundami dookoła Burton Dassett Country Park z finałowym podjazdem.
Na początku etapu od peletonu odjechali: Tony Gallopin (AG2R La Mondiale), Remy Mertz (Lotto Soudal) i Alex Colman (Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes). Dołączył do nich Joe Dibben (Madison Genesis). Mocne tempo w peletonie spowodowało, że uciekinierzy zostali szybko doścignięci.
Na 130 kilometrów przed metą na czele kręcili Cameron Meyer (Mitchelton-Scott) i Dylan van Baarle (Team Ineos). Dwójka długo utrzymywała się z przewagą nad peletonem. Na rundach van Baarle odskoczył od Meyera. Holender został doścignięta na 8 kilometrów przed metą.
Potem zaatakowała grupa w składzie: Amund Grondahl Jansen (Team Jumbo-Visma), Xandro Meurisse (Wanty Gobert), Ben Swift (Team Ineos), Tanel Kangert (EF Education First) i James Shaw (Swift Carbon Pro Cycling).
Odjazd został zlikwidowany na ostatnim kilometra, chociaż Jansen i Swift się nie poddawali. Na długi finisz zdecydował się Mathieu van der Poel. Za liderem wyścigu był w stanie pojechać tylko Matteo Trentin. Na ostatnich metrach najmocniejszy okazał się van der Poel. Holender umocnił się na pozycji lidera.
