Mistrz Włoch z drużyny Trek-Segafredo był najszybszy na sprinterskim etapie wokół Madinat Zayed (147 km).
Ucieczkę dnia tworzyło czterech kolarzy: Dion Smith (ONE), Michael Matthews, Jens Keukeleire (Orica-BikeExchange) oraz Gatis Smukulis (Astana).
Mimo że profil etapu był płaski jak stół, a krajobraz monotonny, to pogoń za ucieczką nie szła peletonowi jak po maśle. Około piętnastu kilometrów przed metą przewaga wynosiła sporo ponad minutę.
Następnie okazało się jednak, że peleton znakomicie to obliczył i odjazd został skasowany siedem kilometrów przed metą. W pościg w końcowej fazie etapu włączyła się polska drużyna CCC Sprandi Polkowice, a także Michał Kwiatkowski (Sky), który wykonał dużą pracę na czele peletonu.
Na finiszu znakomitą mocą i prędkością popisał się Giacomo Nizzolo, który zostawił za plecami śmietankę najlepszych sprinterów świata. W samej końcówce z czuba peletonu zniknęła ekipa CCC i żaden Polak ani z tego, ani z innego składu nie walczył o czołowe lokaty.
Kolarze dotarli na metę sporo przed czasem, zatem telewidzowie obejrzeli jedynie ostatnie dziewiętnaście kilometrów.
