Heinrich Haussler (Garmin-Cervelo) objął prowadzenie w wyścigu Tour of Qatar, po tym jak drugi raz z rzędu wygrał etap. Australijczyk pokonał Marka Renshawa (HTC-Columbia) oraz Daniele Bennatiego (Leopard-Trek).
Od początku we znaki dawał się silny wiatr. Jednak po przejechaniu 36 kilometrów na czele pojawiła się grupka w składzie: Andrew Fenn (Post-Sean Kelly), Alexander Kristoff (BMC) Ronan Van Zandbeek (Skil-Shimano), Tanel Kangert (Astana), Stijn Neirynck (Topsport Vlaanderen) oraz Russell Downing (Team Sky). Sześcioosobowa grupka wypracowała sobie nawet 12 minut i 15 sekund przewagi.
Za peletonem niespodziewanie został Fabian Cancellara (Leopard Trek), który na metę przyjechał 32 minuty i 50 sekund za Heinrichem Hausslerem!
Ucieczka została schwytana na 50 kilometrów przed metą, i wtedy rozpoczęły się próby rantowania. „Sojusz” zawarły ekipy Garmin-Cervelo, Leopard-Trek oraz HTC-Colubmia, które chciały zgubić dotychczasowego lidera Toma Boonena i jego ekipę Quick-Step. Plan się powiódł i na metę wpadła kilkunastoosobowa grupka, z której najszybciej finiszował Haussler i pod nieobecność Belga, to on został nowym liderem wyścigu. Drugie miejsce przypadło dla Renshawa, trzeci był Bennati.
W klasyfikacji generalnej Haussler ma 4 sekundy przewagi nad Renshawem. Bennati jest trzeci ze stratą 15 sekund do kolarza Garminu.
