Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) potwierdził swoje wszechstronne umiejętności raz jeszcze, odnosząc zwycięstwo na drugim w tegorocznej edycji Tour de France etapie jazdy indywidualnej na czas. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) bezpiecznie przejechał trasę i znajduje się o mały kroczek od obrony maillot jaune.
W przedostatnim dniu wyścigu Tour de France kolarze musieli zmierzyć się z drugim w tegorocznej edycji etapem jazdy indywidualnej na czas. Tym razem mieli do pokonania 30,8 km pomiędzy miejscowościami Libourne a Saint-Émilion. Na trasie zaplanowano dwa punkty pomiaru czasu – w Pomerol (7,6 km) oraz w Montagne (20,1 km). Łączna liczba metrów przewyższenia wynosiła niecałe 300, co sprzyjało wysokim średnim prędkościom i szybkiej jeździe, choć… spora liczba elementów infrastruktury drogowej i zakrętów wymagała od kolarzy dobrych umiejętności technicznych.
Pierwszy ciekawy pojedynek stoczyli między sobą Mikkel Bjerg, trzykrotny mistrz świata ITT orlików, oraz zwycięzca etapu jazdy na czas w wyścigu Paryż-Nicea Stefan Bissegger. Kolarz UAE Team Emirates pokonał trasę w czasie 36 minut i 45 sekund, zaś Szwajcar był od niego szybszy o 4 sekundy.
Pierwszy z Polaków na starcie, czyli Michał Kwiatkowski, który wyruszył na trasę o godz. 15:05 przyjechał na metę z czasem 41 minut i 39 sekund, co oznaczało bardzo odległą końcową lokatę. „Kwiato” postanowił więc najwyraźniej odpuścić – mówiąc kolokwialnie – ten etap i rozpocząć de facto proces regeneracji przed wyścigiem olimpijskim. Rafał Majka z kolei, który w ciągu ostatnich trzech tygodni pomagał Tadejowi Pogačarowi oraz zmagał się ze skutkami kraksy, uzyskał czas 39:53.
Czas Bisseggera jako pierwszy pobił mistrz Danii w samotnej walce z czasem Kasper Asgreen. Było to 36 minut i 14 sekund, co oznacza, że Duńczyk „wykręcił” średnią prędkość 51 km/h. Jednak w momencie, gdy Asgreen dojechał do mety, na trasie wciąż znajdował się mistrz Europy Stefan Kung. Kolarz Groupama-FDJ był szybszy od niego na pierwszym punkcie pomiaru czasu i jechał znakomicie technicznie. W Montagne z kolei wciąż był szybszy od Asgreena, ale margines znacznie się zmniejszył. Ostatecznie Szwajcar uległ Asgreenowi o 17 sekund, co tylko pokazuje, jak wymagający był tegoroczny Tour.
Kolejnym zawodnikiem, który mógł realnie zagrozić Kasperowi Asgreenowi był Wout Van Aert. „Mr. Versatile” jak ochrzczono Belga od angielskiego słowa wszechstronny, był szybszy od Duńczyka na wszystkich pomiarach czasu i ostatecznie ustanowił czas o 21 sekund lepszy, a średnia prędkość jaką uzyskał to 51,5 km/h. Tym samym siadając na tzw. „gorącym krześle” mógł jedynie z lekkim niepokojem oczekiwać tylko na występ lidera wyścigu. Ciekawymi danymi dotyczącymi występu Belga podzielili się organizatorzy wyścigu Tour de France: Van Aert był o 0,3 km/h wolniejszy na ostatnim sektorze trasy niż Asgreen, ale na pierwszych 21 kilometrach wypracował sobie wystarczająco dużą przewagę, by objąć wirtualne prowadzenie.
W momencie, gdy wszyscy kolarze z pierwszej dziesiątki przejechali oba pomiary czasu wszystko wskazywało na to, że utrzymają swoje pozycje. Najbardziej historycznego osiągnięcia dokonał Richard Carapaz, który w niedzielę zostanie pierwszym Ekwadorczykiem, który stanie na podium Tour de France. Tymczasem kolejnym świetnym występem w jeździe na czas popisał się Jonas Vingegaard, który finiszował trzeci, utrzymując oczywiście pozycję wicelidera wyścigu.
Tadej Pogačar zajął ostatecznie ósmą pozycję na etapie, tracąc do Wouta Van Aert 57 sekund. Tym razem Słoweniec nie musiał jechać tak agresywnie jak na La Planche des Belles Filles, a jedynie dbać o swoje bezpieczeństwo i niezbyt duże straty wobec chociażby Vingegaarda. Wszystko przebiegło zgodnie z planem i 22-latek jutro odbędzie rundę honorową po Polach Elizejskich w stolicy Francji.
