Pierwszym, który od kilku miesięcy pokonał Filippo Ganę w jeździe indywidualnej na czas jest Wout Van Aert z drużyny Jumbo-Visma. Belg był o 6 sekundy szybszy nie tylko od Włocha, ale także od długo siedzącego na gorącym krześle Kunga. Prowadzenie w klasyfikacji generalnej utrzymał Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), odnosząc tym samym zwycięstwo w już drugim wyścigu etapowym w sezonie 2021.
Zmagania w tegorocznej edycji „wyścigu dwóch mórz” zwieńczyła krótka i całkowicie płaska „czasówka” w San Benedetto del Tronto na dystansie 10,1 km. Była ona zatem skrojona pod typowych specjalistów od jazdy na czas pokroju Filippo Ganny czy Stefana Kunga. Wynosząca ponad minutę przewaga Tadeja Pogačara (UAE Team Emirates) w klasyfikacji generalnej pozwalała przypuszczać, że to właśnie Słoweniec będzie zwycięzcą wyścigu.
Sześciokrotny mistrz Polski w jeździe indywidualnej na czas Maciej Bodnar z drużyny BORA-hansgrohe ruszył na trasę o godzinie 13:46 i potencjalnie mógł poprawić zajmującego wówczas miejsce na gorącym krześle Michaela Hepburna z drużyny Bike Exchange, którego czas to 11:33. Polak przyjechał jednak na metę piąty, z czasem 11:37. Z kolei inny były mistrz Polski w tej specjalności Michał Kwiatkowski stracił do etapowego zwycięzcy 38 sekund.
Bardzo interesująca była rywalizacja o zwycięstwo etapowe pomiędzy mistrzem Europy Stefanem Kungiem a mistrzem świata Filippo Ganną. Niespodziewanie po raz pierwszy od 20 października Włoch z drużyny INEOS Greandiers nie wygrał etapu jazdy indywidualnej na czas, w którym startował. Na mecie okazał się bowiem gorszy od Szwajcara o 4 sekundy – wykręcił czas 11 minut i 16 sekund. Pomimo ostatecznej przegranej Kunga, drużyna Groupama-FDJ może być zadowolona z ostatniego etapu wyścigu. Bardzo dobrą „czasówkę” jak na specjalistę od jazdy w trudnym terenie pojechał Thibaut Pinot, który do swojego kolegi z drużyny stracił tylko 29 sekund. Jeszcze lepiej zaprezentował się Benjamin Thomas, który był wolniejszy od Kunga tylko o 4 sekundy.
Stefan Kung bardzo długo zajmował gorące krzesło, ale musiał z niego zejść w momencie, gdy do mety dojechał drugi w „generalce” Wout Van Aert, który pokonał mistrza świata i mistrza Europy w jeździe na czas, godząc na swój sposób tych dwóch wielkich faworytów do zwycięstwa. Kolarz Jumbo-Visma pokonał zadaną na dziś trasę w czasie 11:06 i uzyskał imponującą średnią prędkość 57 km/h.
Jeśli zaś idzie o klasyfikację generalną, to ciekawa zmiana dokonała się na miejscach 6. i 7.. To lepsze na rzecz Joao Almeidy stracił Tim Wellens. Portugalczyk był szybszy od Belga o 18 sekund. Z kolei bardzo dobrą jazdą dzisiaj zwycięstwo w klasyfikacji generalnej przypieczętował Pogačar, który finiszował czwarty unosząc na mecie rękę w geście triumfu.
