Już tylko 129 kolarzy wystartowało do szesnastego etapu Giro d’Italia. Z wyścigu wycofał się Davide Ballerini. Powodem są kłopoty zdrowotne Włocha. Tym samym już tylko dwóch zawodników Soudal – Quick Step walczy na włoskich szosach.

Giro d’Italia nie skończy także Simon Clarke. Reprezentujący barwy Israel – Premier Tech Australijczyk od kilku dni zmagała się z chorobą i wraz z zespołem zadecydował, że powróci do domu, aby zregenerować swoje siły.

Z wyścigu wycofał się także przed etapem Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier (Trek – Segafredo). Erytrejczyk nadal zmaga się z bólem żeber, który jest konsekwencją upadku na czternastym odcinku.
