André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) po finiszu z peletonu wygrał drugi etap wyścigu Baloise Belgium Tour i pozostał na pozycji lidera zarówno w klasyfikacji generalnej, jak i punktowej.
Drugi etap wyścigu Baloise Belgium Tour 2018 liczył 162,1 km i prowadził z Lochristi do Knokke-Heist – miasta położonego nad Morzem Północnym. Przeznaczony dla sprinterów finisz zaplanowano tuż obok plaży, a wcześniej trzeba było pokonać dwie rundy po nieco ponad 19 kilometrów.
Ucieczkę dnia stworzyło pięciu kolarzy, a jej skład wyglądał następująco: Antoine Warnier (WB Aqua Protect Veranclassic), Jimmy Janssens (Cibel – Cebon), Rob Ruijgh (Tarteletto – Isorex), Johan Jacobs (Pauwels sauzen – Vastgoedservice Continental Team) oraz Quinten Hermans (Telenet Fidea Lions).
Etap od początku przebiegał w szybkim tempie. Przez pierwszą godzinę peleton przejechał ponad 48 kilometrów, zatem uciekinierom trudno było wypracować większą przewagę – ta najpierw oscylowała wokół półtorej minuty, a po wjeździe na rundy spadła poniżej 60 sekund.
Ucieczka dnia została zlikwidowana 15 kilometrów przed metą. Zaraz później, także z powodu tzw. złotego kilometra, rozpoczęły się kontrataki z peletonu, ale poza walką o sekundy nikomu nie udało się odjechać.
Na ostatnich kilometrach bardzo ładnie na czele peletonu pracowała ekipa Vital Concept, która ma w swoich szeregach szybkiego Bryana Coquarda, ale ekipa Lotto-Soudal nie straciła czujności, 1,5 kilometra przed kreską wyszła na czoło i perfekcyjnie rozprowadziła André Greipela, który uniósł ręce w geście triumfu po raz drugi z rzędu.
Niemiecki sprinter popisał się dużą mocą na finiszu na górce i nie dał sobie wyjść z koła żadnemu rywalowi. Jako drugi finiszował Wouter Wippert, a trzeci był Tim Merlier.
