Michał Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) has won the gold medal in the Polish time trial nationals. This is the second Polish TT title in his career.
Polish nationals kicked off on Wednesday, the 21st June. Elite men`s TT race was the day`s main event. The race consisted of two laps of a total of 20 km.
Unfortunately, only fourteen riders competed for the title of the best time trialist. Michał Kwiatkowski started relatively early and his intermediate split time was 24:34. Szymon Rekita (Leopard) struggled over a minute longer to cover the same distance, along with Kamil Gradek from the British cycling team – ONE Pro Cycling, the difference between their times being of a mere six seconds.
Marcin Białobłocki’s (CCC Sprandi Polkowice) intermediate split time was 25:12, while Maciej Bodnar’s (BORA-hansgrohe) 25:35. Considering these results, Michał Kwiatkowski turned out to be impossible to beat.
Kwiatkowski scored the best time at the finish line – 49:42. Almost convinced of his victory, he waited on the hot seat for his rivals to arrive. Szymon Rekita lost to Kwiatkowski by two minutes and thirty-one seconds, but he was still in contention for a podium place. However, on the second part of the distance, the Leopard’s rider lost 0:44 to Kamil Gradek.
Apart from Gradek, Karol Domagalski was also better than Szymon Rekita, and, if it hadn’t been for Białobocki, he would have received a medal. CCC Sprandi Polkowice`s rider finished at 50:52, and so he became the Polish time trial vice-champion. Maciej Bodnar, who fought to the very last meter of the distance had to satisfy himself with the bronze medal.
