Zwycięstwem Andre Greipela zakończył się trzeci etap wyścigu Ster ZLM Toer. Niemiec pokonał w grupowym finiszu Moreno Hoflanda i Edwarda Theunsa.
Piątkowy odcinek holenderskiej etapówki prowadził po dość wymagającej trasie, na której znajdowało się kilka ciężkich podjazdów, wśród których był także osławiony Cauberg. Ostatnia górka była jednak usytuowana ponad 50 kilometrów przed metą, więc można było się spodziewać sprinterskiego finiszu.
Aż do podjazdu znanego z trasy Amstel Gold Race, na czele wyścigu nie mogła utworzyć się żadna grupka. Ostatecznie jednak odjechać udało się dziesiątce, w skład której wchodzili Iljo Keisse i Gianni Meersman (Etixx – Quickstep), Roy Curvers (Giant – Alpecin), Roger Kluge (IAM Cycling), Patrick Konrad (Bora – Argon), Kristian Sbaragli (MTN – Qhubeka), Jetse Bol (De Rijke), Stefan Poutsma (Jo Piels), Jasper Hamelink (Metec) oraz Twan Castelijns (Baby – Dump). Czołówka dość szybko zyskała dwie minuty przewagi, jednak do mety było jeszcze bardzo daleko.
Ucieczka między sobą rozgrywała wszystkie górskie i lotne premie, a po zaledwie kilkudziesięciu kilometrach odpadł z niej Sbaragli. Jednocześnie przewaga grupki wzrosła do 4 minut, co dawało już pewne nadzieje na walkę z peletonem.
Jak się jednak okazało, było to tylko złudzenie. Grupa zasadnicza po chwili postanowiła wyraźnie przyspieszyć, co spowodowało poruszenie wśród kolarzy Etixx, którzy postanowili zostawić z tyłu kolegów z odjazdu. W tym samym czasie peleton zaczęli prowadzić kolarze Lotto – Soudal. Na około 50 kilometrów do mety sytuacja nieco się uspokoiła. Różnica pomiędzy czołówką, a grupą liderów wynosiła około 2 minuty.
Na kończących etap rundach w Buchten, na czele został już osamotniony Keisse, który starał się wykorzystać kręte uliczki do utrzymania niewielkiej przewagi. Na nic się to jednak zdało, a o triumfie etapowym zdecydował grupowy sprint. Ostatecznie, jako pierwszy linię mety przekroczył Andre Greipel (Lotto – Soudal). Tuż za nim linię mety przekroczył Moreno Hofland (LottoNL – Jumbo), a podium uzupełnił Edward Theuns (Topsport – Vlaanderen).
